Happiness Rises with Age

Happiness Rises with Age

On one of my recent posts I discussed happiness and aging and how happiness rises with age. There is a persistent myth that life gets more difficult with age and I touched upon new studies that indicated that our live actually grow happier after we pass the mid-forties. My own experience backs up the theory that grumpiness and old age is a myth because when I think of my own grandparents, they always seemed content with life, and made me feel loved and happy whenever we were together. As I wrote about Morgan Freeman’s approach to life that, “You have ... Read More »

The Road to Authentic Happiness

The Road to Authentic Happiness

Being honest there are times in my life (though they are fading) when the happiness I’m experiencing is superficial. It’s conditional, based in my self-image. As my meditation practice evolved I discovered that the road to authentic happiness as nothing to do with my self-esteem, or maybe more accurately, my self-image. Self-image arises from what from what you believe that other people believe about you. The authentic-self lies beyond the belief of others. The authentic-self is, according to the great American Psychologist Abraham Maslow, independent of the good or bad opinion of others. Shifting my identity from my ego oriented ... Read More »

Morgan Freeman Happiness and Birthdays

Morgan Freeman Happiness and Birthdays

Riding the Happiness Curve Morgan Freeman just turned a spry 76. Happy Birthday! You have to believe that someone as successful and talented as Mr. Freeman has a lot of wisdom to share about life, happiness, and birthdays. There has long been a belief that as we age life gets harder, if not financially, at least physically.  As we approach the mid-point of our lives we face a growing pessimism about what aging inevitably brings. The studies bear this out; up to a point, that is. Recent studies done in England, using data collected in 80 different countries measuring levels ... Read More »

Happiness is measured in GNH

Can Happiness be Measured in GNH?

First of all, what is GNH and just how can happiness be measured in GNH? GNH means “Gross National Happiness,” the concept was originated by the leader of Bhutan, the fourth Dragon King. In a “nut shell” the idea was to measure the level of happiness of the people of Bhutan. Bhutan’s government seeks to balance and connect the happiness and personal well-being of its entire people with the economic growth of the country. How to you measure that? Bhutan’s “A Short Guide to Gross National Happiness Index,” offers number of measurable indicators, for example; Psychological Wellbeing which includes factors such ... Read More »

Practices to Create a Happier Morning

Practices to Create a Happier Morning

I never used to be a morning person. This meant of course that when I get have to get up early, which was practically every morning during the week,  that I could be a bit of a grump. It was a little like the old Seinfeld bit about “late night Jerry and morning Jerry” and the ongoing feud between the two alter egos; with late night jerry always driving morning jerry to madness by staying up way to late, leaving early morning jerry shaking his fist and threating some sort of retribution. I knew that this was no way to ... Read More »

Small Steps toward Happiness

Small Steps toward Happiness

For me the greatest obstacle on the road to happiness was just getting started, as I’m sure it is for many people. As I would start down my road to happiness (meaning I would consider making the big changes), I would start out very gung-ho only to find my torrent of enthusiasm fading to a trickle of “wouldn’t it be nice if that happened,” type thinking by the onset of February – at least that use to be my pattern. But I’ve changed my approach, and instead of making, what to my ego-mind seemed like huge changes, I just taken ... Read More »

Finding Your Passion and Happiness

Finding Your Passion and Happiness

“How can I find out what my life’s purpose is? I know there’s something I’m supposed to be doing, but I can’t figure out what it is.” These thoughts or some variation of these concerns come up whenever there’s a discussion about “following your bliss” or finding your passion and happiness. Maybe you’re feeling vaguely restless, that time’s passing you by, and that you haven’t discovered that something “meaningful” yet. Perhaps you are searching for work that excites you and is full of promise. I think what you are feeling is coming from your souls purpose. At the deepest level, ... Read More »

Happiness is a Laughing Meditation

Happiness is a Laughing Meditation

When was the last time that you busted out laughing? I mean really let go, rolling on the ground, crying tears because it hurt so good! If you answer was, “just a little while ago,” then kudos to you. But if your answer was, “I can’t remember the last time,” then maybe it’s time to stop and take note, maybe, just maybe, happiness is a laughing meditation for you. Do you know laughing can be a meditation? Of course it’s not meditation in the way it is usually thought of, quiet, present, with awareness turned inward. But like the meditation ... Read More »

Discovering the Truth about Happiness

Discovering the Truth about Happiness

Happiness is fundamental to our existence as human beings. During the last few decades discovering the truth about happiness, under the guise of “positive psychology,” has become a growing field of study. Prior to the emergence of the science of happiness, psychology’s focus had been on what’s wrong; what made us all unhappy.  This may have been because studying happiness was akin to trying to reduce love its component parts, unfamiliar territory those following the rigors of research and science. There was no formal formula for happiness until leading researchers in the field of positive psychology, especially professors Sonja Lyubomirsky, Martin ... Read More »

A Rampage of Happiness

A Rampage of Happiness

“There’s happiness right here right now if you are in the right vibration.” Abraham This wonderful remix of Abraham’s (through Esther) rampage of happiness offers us the key to connecting to our inherent source of joy, by being in alignment, and then becomes the key itself. Savoring the deliciously wonderful vibration that is offered the experiencer becomes the experience; happiness.
