Happiness is Finding Your Unique Purpose

Happiness is Finding Your Unique Purpose In my last post, happiness, success and personal development,” I asked the question, is there a key to happiness; how can we move toward greater self-awareness?

We discovered that the key happiness is the key. But not the happiness found in things, the stuff we want, or even with others, the relationships we’d like to have…rather a kind of happiness that is already within our reach.

We also saw that success is how you define it, and that it falls into two basic categories, worldly success and personal success. We learned that there’s, a blueprint, a science for achieving success.

This blueprint is made up of four components, your purpose, abundance, pleasure and freedom. In this post we will discuss the first of these four components… your unique purpose.

Becoming a Force of Nature

Each of us has a unique purpose, a reason for being. It is a drive that’s not visible to us and yet is the primary energy and motivator of our lives…it is a force of Nature. It’s the same unstoppable power that pushes the seed to drive its roots into solid rock as it reaches for the heavens above; doing so until it has fulfilled its purpose or perished in the process.

The seed, driven to fulfill its potential, is never trying to be something other than what it is. The sunflower seed doesn’t try to grow into an oak tree; it instead fulfills its special purpose.

Tradition teaches us that there is an abiding intelligence at work, this intelligent force of nature pervades and informs everything from the electrons whizzing around the nucleus of an atom to the light pulsing from the most distant star.

The father of quantum mechanics, Max Planck, explained it this way:

“As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clearheaded science – to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about Atoms this much – there is no matter as such – all matter originates and exists only by virtue of the force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together.”

“We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”

This unseen force, this“matrix of all matter,” is an infinite web of intelligence that sustains and supports, both the universe as a whole, and each individual creation – every mineral, plant and person contained within it. Even every cell in your body has its unique purpose that collectively supports the functioning of your whole body.

A Powerful Force to create lasting Happiness

Our ‘purpose’ is a powerful force that pushes each of us with a longing to thrive, to become what and who we are meant to be. Science has also taught us that there’s an innate desire to thrive and expand, which is not only in the best interest of the individual but in the best interest of the universe as a whole.

One of the great wisdom teachers of our time, Albert Einstein, described it this way:

“A human being is part of the whole, called by us the “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to the affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Einstein’s words help us to see beyond the perception that we are separate from everything else and this perception is at the very core of understanding and experiencing our purpose. Einstein understood the true meaning of purpose: that our individual happiness and is inextricably linked to the fate of the world around us. To see this principle at work, we need only to notice the air we breathe and the food we eat or even our economics, given our ever-increasing global interdependence.

Understanding that we are an integral part of the whole does not mean that we give up seeking what is good for us as individuals; in fact the opposite is true.

It comes down to is this; when we act based on our highest aspirations, we contribute to and elevate the best interest of the whole; this is the process of being in harmony with the universal intelligence that pervades all things.

This is not a mystical experience, though all mystics have experience it – all of us have connected to this experience one time or another. You may have experienced this connection as you were engulfed by the awe inspiring beauty of a mountain meadow or the power of the surf on an isolated beach, perhaps it happened as you gazed on masterpiece, a painting that took your breath away, or maybe it was a piece of music that stirred your soul; in those moments you were connected to the whole, your source of true happiness.

The most powerful task in personal development

The greatest and most powerful task in anyone’s personal development is to become fully committed to discovering their true purpose in life.

Benjamin Franklin understood this saying, “the masterpiece of man, is to live to the purpose.”

Another great teacher said about the significance of finding and living your purpose, “Analyze what you are, what you wish to become, and what shortcomings are impeding you. Decide the nature of your true task – your mission in life. Endeavor to make yourself what you should be and what you want to be.”

The wisdom these great teachers are sharing is from the moment you fully commit to your true purpose which is in harmony with the larger scheme of your life, your life changes irrevocably for the better, because from the moment you connect yourself to your right purpose you become, ‘a force of nature.’

This is the foundation for achieving your best life, the one that you came into this world to fulfill; this is your true destiny.

Discovering your destiny, your purpose, is just the first step, you must have the means to fulfill it – including money, security and good health.

In the next post on “happiness, success and personal development,” we will look at creating abundance or prosperity – the science of manifesting your intentions…
